Today, RealNetworks released its newest security update for RealPlayer to address vulnerabilities for Windows users. If you use RealPlayer for Windows, we strongly recommend downloading the most current version released late last week, which patches vulnerabilities and contains bug fixes and other updates to the player.

Users running older versions of RealPlayer should download the update from www.real.com to protect their computers from hackers who may exploit these vulnerabilities, compromising the user’s device. The attacker could execute arbitrary code on the device if the user visits a malicious site or opens a malicious file.

RealNetworks always recommends that customers run the latest versions of its software. For more information about the security update, please visit: http://service.real.com/realplayer/security/en/

Sometimes when I zone out and at loss at what to surf for on the web, I turn to movie trailers. And sometimes I’m a dork and watch trailers to movies I’ve already seen. Oftentimes they are chick flicks that I’ve seen but am temporarily obsessed with.

But for the purposes of this post, I refrained from watching the Something Borrowed Trailer for the seventeenth time and focused on movies slated to come out this year.

The Vow – Feb. 10

Time for some chick flick romance! Based on the Nicholas Spark novel, the story follows a young married couple whose happiness is jeopardized when the wife wakes up with no memory of her life after a car accident. She doesn’t even remember her husband aka Channing Tatum. It’s a little soap opera with the whole amnesia storyline, but it doesn’t make the story any less sad.

The Hunger Games – March 23

I don’t know who isn’t excited for this movie to come out. From what I’ve imagined from reading the books, it looks just as I had imagined, which is always a good sign that the movie will be true to the book. In case you are one of the few who don’t know the premise of the Hunger Games, it’s set in the future and the Capitol selects a boy and a girl from each of the twelve districts to compete to the death. Katniss Everdeen volunteers to compete in place of her younger sister, and hangs out with a lot of eye candy in the process.

The Five-Year Engagement – April 27

I love Jason Segel, who is quickly gaining traction as America’s favorite comedic actor. This movie begins where most chick flicks end: after the happy ending and the marriage proposal. When his fiancé, played by Emily Blunt, takes a job offer that throws a wrench in wedding plan, we see how the couple deals with their relationship. What pitfalls will they encounter? Will they last? I think they will, since it’s a chick flick, but I’m game to watch the movie.

The Avengers – May 4

I love get-together movies with lots of famous people, and movies about a ton of superheroes is one I’m looking forward to. This movie, from the Joss Whedon (aka the guy who gave us Buffy the Vampire Slayer), follows Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Hawk Eye, and Black Widow as they team up and prevent the world from destruction due to a security breach.

The Amazing Spider Man – July 3

After watching The Social Network last year and developing a crush on Andrew Garfield (who played Mark Zuckerberg’s bestie), I was super excited to see that he was the lead in a super hero movie. This version of the Spider Man story promises to tell a story that people aren’t familiar with, namely Peter Parker’s teenage years. The average teen has enough angst to deal with, but throw in a few webs and things are bound to get interesting.

The Dark Knight Rises – July 20

The conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy sure is causing some hype. The movie, which takes place eight years after the previous installment, also features Batman’s sweet new ride: a jet. The trailer itself is something to remark on. It broke iTunes download records in December with over 12.5 million views in 24 hours.

What movies are you looking forward to seeing this year?

Fact: I’m allergic to cats. I know, it’s sad that I won’t get to experience first-hand how awesome they are and hold them and grow old and become a cat lady. That’s why I turn to cat videos. I can live vicariously through other people and just be entertained by felines that I can never call my own.

Er…anyway, my supposed love for cats aside…here’s a list of some of my favorite videos of those little rascals.

Songify This: Can’t Hug Every Cat

As of the time I’m writing this post, there have been over 13.6 million views of this video. What’s not to love about this video with a catchy song, real cats, and Nyan Cat? I actually like this video more than the original because of the song and there are actual cats in it! I probably contributed about 100 views myself alone. How do I know this? Because I know every single word.

Cat Gone (Hunchback Cat)

This 16 second video is too funny not to watch over and over again.

Spider Cat

Much like the Hunchback Cat, the Spider Cat engages in some eyebrow raising movements.

Kitten vs TWO scary things

The music really makes this video. I don’t know what song it is, but the crescendos and raucous music is set perfectly in time to the kitten’s battle movements.

Cat gets caught barking by a human and resumes meowing

I love it whenever animals pretend they’re an animal they’re not. In this case, this cat just keeps barking, and well, the title says it all. It’s almost scary to think what else cats are up to when humans out of the house.

What other cat videosis your favorite?

We’re very happy to announce that we have just signed a big agreement with Intel Corporation. Under the agreement they will purchase a significant number of patents from us as well as our next generation video codec software for $120 million.

Under the terms of the sale, we will retain certain rights to continue to use the patents in current and future products. We don’t anticipate that the sale will have any material effect on our business.

In addition to the sale of the patents and next-generation video codec software, RealNetworks and Intel signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future support and development of the next-generation video codec software and related products.

RealNetworks President and CEO Thomas Nielsen

Now a little from our new President and CEO, Thomas Nielsen:

Selling these patents to Intel is a first step in unlocking the substantial and unrealized value of RealNetworks assets. It represents an extraordinary opportunity for us to generate additional capital to boost investments in new businesses and markets while still protecting our existing business.

We’re pleased Intel has agreed to acquire our next generation video codec software and team. Intel has a strong reputation as a technology innovator, and we believe they are well positioned to build on the development work and investment we’ve made in this area.

We look forward to working with Intel to support the development of the next-generation video codec software and to expanding our relationship into new products and markets.

In all, the sale includes approximately 190 patents and 170 patent applications and the next generation video codec software.

2011 has just ended, and we’ve seen round-ups of the year’s best in music, movies, TV shows, viral videos, political snafus, and the like. To join all the cool people compiling such lists, I’ve decided to come up with some videos that have been most memorable from 2011, ranging from mainstream to a little more indie.

“Born This Way” – Lady Gaga

Early last year, Lady Gaga came out with her “Born This Way” video. Like many of her other videos, this one was as elaborate and theatrical as her previous ones. Not only does it have some bizarre props and costumes (or lack thereof), but the video also puts the message of refusing to change for anyone but yourself into motion and art. Oh, Gaga. You’re so sweet.

“All Of The Lights” – Kanye West ft. Rihanna and Kid Cudi

I included this music video mostly because I like the song, and also because the use of colored and flashing lights were pretty cool. The different fonts and styles of the lyrics displayed on the screen were also pretty impressive, but I’m still not 100% sure what’s going on in the music video. What’s Kanye doing on a police car? Why does Rhianna keep appearing in a dominatrix-like outfit? So many questions.

“Look At Me Now” – Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes

This video has everything to feel fly. It’s everything that’s badass squeezed into a little over four minutes. I’m not sure what to focus on when I’m watching this video. Should I look at the graffiti, the dancing, the tricked out wheels, or count the number of chains?

“The Show Goes On” – Lupe Fiasco

It’s rare to see a rap video with so little special effects and lack of props. But, for some songs, like this one, you can actually focus more on the lyrics. Most of the video follows Lupe as he makes his way from his dressing room to the stage and getting progressively pumped as he prepares to perform. And, because I’m a dork, this song goes through my head whenever I’m making my way to something big, like a test, a blind date, or Black Friday shopping.

“Howlin’ For You” – The Black Keys

I remember watching this music and going, “This is so cool!” The idea of making a music video in the style of a movie trailer is one of the more creative ideas from this year’s videos. The Black Keys themselves barely appear in the video, as “Las Tecras Negras,” but the “trailer” for the movie about an assassin seeking revenge is made even more awesome by “Howlin’ For You” playing in the background.

“Till the World Ends” – Britney Spears

I for one am excited that Britney is making a comeback. This video reminds me of “I’m A Slave 4 U” Britney, with her outfits and the sweaty people dancing behind her, and the song also lends itself to some pretty sweet remixes, too. Go Britney!

“Cats and Dogs” The Head and the Heart

It’s always more fun to watch a music video when you can really tell that the band is having fun making it, especially when it looks they like had an enjoyable afternoon filming in someone’s basement. The Head and the Heart sure took this approach when they filmed “Cats and Dogs,” with humorous details such as salting corn like it’s an instrument, blurring a life-size cutout of Taylor Swift, sporting a fake and very lustrous full-on beard and animal costumes.

“Heartbreak Heartbreak” – The BGP

This video from indie band THE BGP follows the band members as they do things that I have only ever imagined doing, such as riding around nonchalantly in a grocery cart as a full-grown adult, riding in the bed of the a pick-up truck, and smashing electronics and watermelons on a sunny afternoon in a field.

What are some of the most memorable music videos you’ve seen in 2011?
