STARZ! TICKET ON REAL MOVIES ADDS 50% MORE MOVIES, PROGRESSIVE DOWNLOAD FEATURE
Premium Movie Download Service from Starz, RealNetworks Now Offers About 150 Movies Each Week
Progressive Download Function Part of RealPlayer 10.5, Allows Movie-Viewing During Broadband Delivery of Film to Hard Drive
Continued Momentum as Intel Demonstrated Wireless Encrypted Delivery of Service to TV
Englewood, Colo. and Seattle, Wash. September 27, 2004 RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK) and Starz Encore Group LLC (Starz) today announced two significant additions to STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies, the first premium subscription movie service delivered over high-speed broadband connections to PCs. Effective immediately, the $12.95 per month service now offers approximately 150 new release and classic Hollywood titles - a 50% increase in title count. Also available is a new, progressive download feature that enables viewers to begin watching the movie while the download is in progress.
Separately, the companies lauded the technological progress demonstrated earlier this month at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. The companies believe that DTCP-IP and other evolving content delivery standards will ultimately assist in greater adoption and acceptance of broadband as a viable means of delivering movies into the home. More information on STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies is available at http://movies.real.com and www.starz.com.
STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies gives subscribers access to a rotating library of premium, major motion pictures for only $12.95 per month. Unlike pay-per-view services, STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies does not charge a separate fee each time a movie is downloaded, so subscribers can watch as much as they want for no additional charge.
Approximately 25% of the STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies library is rotated weekly, equating to over 250 unique titles made available each month. Offered in RealVideo® 10.5 and through RealPlayer®, movies will take as little as a few minutes to download depending on the speed of the subscriber's broadband service. Additionally, subscribers have access to a streamed version of the STARZ! linear service.
"Starz has the deepest, most robust library of film titles in pay television to go along with its stable of first-run studio output partners," said Bob Greene, SVP, Advanced Services for Starz. "With this free upgrade to the service, STARZ! Ticket users have an even greater selection of classic films, such as Taxi Driver and The French Connection, in addition to pay-TV movies found exclusively on STARZ! and STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies, including Lost in Translation, Mona Lisa Smile, Spy Kids 3: Game Over, and, coming soon, Miracle and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."
Greene continued, "Under the terms of our studio contracts, until the end of Starz’ first pay--TV window, we are the only subscription service permitted to offer these films through any electronic delivery method. This includes cable, satellite, broadband, and other forms of electronic distribution and typically runs until at least two years after theatrical release." Hollywood studios supplying films to STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies include: Disney, Universal, MGM, Sony, Fox, New Line, Revolution Studios, and Miramax.
Though STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies was created with the PC as the destination for viewing movies; new technology is emerging which will change that dynamic course for consumers. To this end, last week at the Intel Developer Forum, RealNetworks and STARZ! demonstrated support for DTCP-IP, an industry backed content protection scheme that enables delivery of content from the PC to the TV.
"The ability to move content off the PC to other home-networked devices in a standard and secure fashion is a key step in the expansion of our online services," said Richard Wolpert, RealNetworks Chief Strategy Officer. "The success we've seen in delivering subscription services in music with Rhapsodyâ, and in games with RealArcadeâ, coupled with the early feedback from STARZ! Ticket subscribers supports the evolution of delivery and digital media consumption for consumers."
