HISTORY OF STANDARDS COMMITMENT
Real has been active in standards bodies and helping to promote standards for Internet digital media since our founding in 1994. Standards support is in our company DNA. Below are some specific examples of our standards support and leadership.
Full 3GPP Support
Real is a member of 3GPP and participates in the packet-switched streaming (PSS) specification group, SA4 affirming Real’s commitment to standards for the emerging mobile marketplace. 3GPP is the principal underlying standards for Helix Media Delivery System for Mobile and all the components of Helix Media Delivery System are 3GPP Rel. 6 compliant and support H.264, the streaming media format of 3GPP Rel. 6.
Packet Switched Streaming Activity Group
Real is a member of the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC) and participates in the IMTC Packet Switched Streaming Activity Group (PSSAG). The goal of PSSAG is to promote interoperability between vendors in accordance to the 3GPP standards TS 26.2333 and TS 26.234, for delivering and streaming multimedia content over wireless networks.
RTSP: Real-Time Streaming Protocol
RTSP is an open standard for control of delivery of real-time media over the Internet. It defines the protocol between streaming media client and server software and provides a standard way for clients and servers from multiple vendors to manage delivery of multimedia content. RTSP evolved from work done at Real and Netscape. Approved in April, 1998 by IETF.
SMIL: Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language
SMIL 2.0 enables Web authors to easily create synchronized multimedia presentations using a wide range of multimedia elements including voice, music, visual effects, text and graphics. Real helped to develop versions 1 and 2 of this presentation language by working within the W3C Synchronized Multimedia (SYMM) Working Group. Approved in August, 2001 by W3C.
XMCL: eXtensible Markup Commerce Language
In June of 2001, Real announced the creation of the XMCL initiative, an open XML-compliant language designed to establish industry-wide standards for Internet media commerce. Real intends to submit the XMCL proposal to the appropriate standards organization, and will work with other industry leaders to ensure the initiative evolves into a widely accepted standard.
MPEG-4 Support
Most recently, Real announced support for MPEG-4, a multimedia standard developed by the Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG). Native support for MPEG-4 is included in the latest release of Real's system architecture.
