NOTES, TIPS AND TRICKS

  1. Local and streaming playback is supported within the player. Some networks are not enabled to support streaming. If you can access the pages but can not access ANY content and receive an error that states "Server Timeout" please contact your mobile operator and request that they work with Real to enable streaming media
  2. If you have many messages, images or videos stored on the device memory (not MMC) you may overload the memory of the device and you will not be able to use the RealPlayer due to the lack of memory to run the program
  3. Not all content located on the Internet will be properly encoded for playback on this device. There are limitation on bitrate, frame size and frame rate. Please see our mobile encoding specifications page for more information on what is required
  4. The RealOne Mobile Media Guide is a free service offered by Real. We do not charge any fee to the user or operator for this service at this time. Transferring data over GPRS does have a cost associated with it charged by your mobile operator. Please contact your operator for more information on this
  5. MPEG4 and H.263 encoded files are not supported in streaming format on this device
  6. If a streaming video file appears very small in the player you can shut off the resize functionality. From within the player file menu select the Options hotkey. Scroll down and select Settings. Select Auto-scale and toggle to Off
  7. If you are receiving the audio of a streaming video clip but not the video, adjust your Bandwidth. From within the player file menu select the Options hotkey. Scroll down and select Settings. Using the navigation pad move to the right to the network section and you will see Bandwidth. Select Bandwidth and choose a lower number. We find that 26.8 Kbps works well

PLAYER SETTINGS
RealPlayer settings are intended primarily for advanced users and users attempting to work around a technical difficulty. Upon selecting Settings from either the List View or Stopped View, the Settings Selection View should come up with a list of all the available settings categories.

Video Settings
These settings allow the user to control aspects of the video presentation. The automatic resizing of large and small content is controlled here, as well as the codec post filter.

Automatic scaling (Default = On)
This function enables or disables automatic resizing of the video images. When automatic scaling is on, video frame sizes less than or equal to 88x72 are doubled in size and video frame sizes of greater than or equal to 176x144 will be halved. Video frame sizes greater than 352x288 in either dimension cannot be played. When automatic scaling is off, the video frame will be centered on the screen and cropped if the dimensions exceed 174x142.

Post Filter (Default = High Framerate)
This function enables or disables the codec post filter. Sharp Images improves the image clarity at the potential cost of diminished framerate. High framerate emphasizes maximum framerate at the possible expence of image clarity.

Playback Settings
These settings allow the user to control aspects of playback. From here, the user can enable clip/list repeat.

Repeat (Default = Off)
This function enables or disables repeat play mode. If the player is playing single files, the single file repeats after completion when on. If the player is playing a ram file, the ram file repeats after completion when on.

Network Settings
These settings allow the user to control aspects of the network. From here, the user can set the default access point, select Bandwidth detection, set a manual bandwidth maximum throughput, control the timeout for making a connection, and the timeout for dropping a lost or latent connection.

Default Access Point (Default = same as in General Settings for phone)
This settings allows user to select what access point is used with network settings. If the player does not have any access points, or the selected default is invalid at the point when the player attempts to connect to a network address, the user will be prompted to select an access point with "Please configure a default access point". If an access point is already open when the player attempts to connect to a network address, it will check to see if the access point used is the same as the default. If so, it will enter the Connecting state. If not, it will ask the user to confirm disconnecting the already-open access point with Disconnect access point?. If the user selects Cancel, the player will not stream. If the user selects OK, the player will attempt to use its access point and enter the Connecting state upon success.

Bandwidth Detection (Default = Auto)
Bandwidth detection is only displayed as an option when the feature is activated in the realplayer.cfg file. When activated and selected, bandwidth detection uses packet loss characteristics and roundtrip times to adjust delivery rates from a RealServer to maximize the user experience without compromising the network delivery. When on (Automatic), the Bandwidth setting is ignored.

Max Bandwidth (Default = 27.15)
Maximum Bandwidth is the user settable cap for streamable content. The interface allows the user to specify the throughput that is possible; the player engine will calculate the proper sustainable bandwidth from the theoretical maximum. The Bandwidth value only is used if the Bandwidth Detection setting not present or set to Manual.
Note: Over GPRS networks, bandwidth can be quite variable especially as the network load varies. If the user selects a bandwidth that exceeds what can truly be delivered on a sustainable basis, the media experience will suffer.

Connection time-out (Default = 60 secs)
The Connection time-out setting specifies the number of seconds to wait for the initial server connection on a streaming session. This includes the time necessary to select and establish a network connection. The timer begins when the user initiates a play command on a network link and is stopped when the server host is successfully contacted. If the timer reaches the specified timeout value, an error message is propagated and the connection attempt is aborted. Connection time-out can be from 10 seconds to 120 seconds and is adjusted in 5 second intervals along a slider bar.

Server time-out (Default = 40 secs)
The Server time-out setting specifies the number of seconds to allow for no response from the server. The timer begins each time the player core sends a request to the server and is stopped when the server answers the request. If the timer reaches the specified timeout value, an error message is propagated and the connection is aborted. Server time-out can be from 10 seconds to 120 seconds and is adjusted in 5 second intervals along a slider bar.

Lowest port
Allows user to select what server port range to use.

Highest port
Allows user to select what server port range to use.

Proxy Settings
These settings allow the user to control whether a proxy is used, what the proxy address is, and which port it uses.

Proxy (Default = Disabled)
Proxy lets the user select whether to use the Proxy settings set below (in Host address and port). A proxy is used to more efficiently stream across the internet. When this settings is on the value of “Disabled” next two settings (Host address & Proxy Port) are not visible.

Hostname (Default = Blank)
Hostname is used to input the URL for the proxy to be used. The URL is only used when Proxy is enabled in the previous setting. Hostname is a text (alpha numeric) setting and allows direct text input. The Hostname is not used when the “Proxy” Setting is disabled.
Note: Chinese and Chinese input is not available in Hostnames.

Proxy Port (Default = 1091)
Proxy Port lets an advanced user choose a non-standard proxy port for use with the specified Hostname. Proxy Port is a text (numeric) setting and allows direct numeric input. Proxy Port is not used when the “Proxy” Setting is disabled.
