RealNetworks Inc., has hired Cary Baker as its new chief financial officer and treasurer effective May 8.

Baker will oversee all financial operations at RealNetworks (Nasdaq: RNWK) and report directly to Seattle-based tech company’s founder and CEO, Rob Glaser.

“Cary is an outstanding addition to our senior management team,” Glaser said in a news release Thursday. “Over his career, Cary has demonstrated a strong record of operational success and leadership during periods of transition and growth. Cary’s professional experiences and accomplishments are a perfect fit, both for where Real is today and especially for where we are heading.”

Baker succeeds Marjorie Thomas, who will become chief financial officer at the Allen Institute for Brain and Cell Sciences on May 8.

Baker was previously chief financial officer at Heat Software Inc. in Pleasanton, California. Prior to that, he served as chief financial officer at Seattle-based NetMotion Software Inc. and held senior roles at Clearwire Corp., Boost Mobile and Sprint Corp.

“I’m excited by the growth potential I see at RealNetworks,” Baker said. “Real has a long history of incredible innovation, and I look forward to helping the company achieve its goals in the upcoming months and years.”

Baker received a signing bonus of $100,000 and will earn a base salary of $325,000 a year, the company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. He’s also eligible for an annual performance bonus equal to 75 percent of his base salary, up to four months of temporary travel and living expenses capped at $25,000 and up to $40,000 in relocation benefits.

The company will award Baker options to acquire 200,000 shares of common stock, the filing said.
